La Sociedad Interamericana de Horticultura Tropical fue fundada en 1951 como la Región del Caribe de la Sociedad Americana de Ciencias Hortícola (ASHS) Fue organizada gracias a los esfuerzos del Dr. Wilson Popenoe, que ejerció como primer Secretario-Tesorero Los socios fundadores tenían como objetivo principal formar un grupo con los países de la regi6n del Caribe que se reunían regularmente para intercambiar informaci6n sobre la producci6n de cultivos hortícola tropicales (frutales, 'hortalizas y ornamentales), y diseminarán la información en cartas informativas y memorias anuales grupo ha funcionado desde entonces como la única sociedad científica en América tropical dedicada a la colección y difusión de información sobre la producción de cultivos hortícola tropicales. Gradualmente llegaron nuevos socios que incluyen socios fuera de la región del Caribe. En 1966 el nombre de la sociedad fue cambiado por Sociedad Americana de Ciencias Hortícolas - Región Tropical. Un segundo cambio fue realizado en 1986 para convertirse en la Sociedad Interamericana para la Horticultura Tropical (SIHT), cuando por razones legales era necesario para ser independiente de ASHS. SIHT lleva a cabo un congreso anual en un país diferente cada año con la cooperación de organizaciones gubernamentales, educativas o agrícolas locales o internacionales.
